What exactly is exercise therapy?

Bridging the Gap Between Therapy and Personal TrainingExercise therapy takes personal training a step further.Rather than simply prescribing exercises, it starts by understanding how your body functions.Through detailed assessments, we look for limitations in mobility, stability, muscle strength and movement control. This allows us to select targeted exercises that address your individual needs before progressing into structured strength training. The goal isn’t simply to exercise harder. It’s to help your body move and function better, so you can stay stronger and more active for longer.Exercise therapy also provides a valuable bridge between physiotherapy and returning to regular exercise, where medically appropriate.

Why look beyond where it hurts?

Your Body Works as a Connected SystemWhere you feel discomfort isn’t always the only place we need to assess. For example, knee discomfort may be accompanied by limitations in hip stability or ankle mobility.
Shoulder problems may involve how your shoulder blades move, while back stiffness may be influenced by strength, mobility and everyday movement habits.
At PM Fitness, I look at how your body moves as a whole, rather than focusing on one isolated area.By identifying areas that need attention, we can develop a more targeted and personalised exercise programme.

Meet Kate - From St Albans

When Kate first came to PM Fitness, she was experiencing a persistent pinching feeling on the lower back, along with some restriction through the hip.Rather than simply focusing on where she was feeling the discomfort, we looked at how her body was positioned and moving as a whole.Through our assessment process, we identified a left hip hike, where the left side of her pelvis was sitting higher than the right. This appeared to be affecting the way she was moving through the hip and lower back.Together, we focused on correcting the pelvic position, improving movement through the hip and helping the muscles around the pelvis work more effectively. The results were noticeable straight away.✅ Pelvis became noticeably more level✅ Pinching in lower back reduced✅ Hip movement improved✅ Better overall movement and controlMost importantly, this gave us a much better foundation to build from rather than simply managing the area where Kate was feeling weakness and discomfort.Today, we continue to reinforce those improvements while building strength, fitness and resilience so Kate can keep progressing long term.
